Senator suggests re-examining state aid formula, sales tax exemptions

(McCook Gazette) -- In an op-ed at McCookGazette.com, State Sen. Dan Hughes of Venango writes about the challenges facing ag landowners and local property taxes. Sen. Hughes writes that "the real driving force behind the property tax problem" is the State of Nebraska's TEEOSA school aid formula, uses state income and sales tax revenue to subsidize K-12 local education. According to the senator, "this formula is working as designed, but that design is flawed and needs to be changed." Sen. Hughes also writes that the upcoming legislative session could see a proposed "broadening the sales tax base" since "over the years," lawmakers "have slowly but steadily continued to grant additional exemptions for sales tax, and it is time to reverse that trend."
